Mass Protests Erupt in Manila Over Corruption Scandal

Mass Protests Erupt in Manila Over Corruption Scandal

The streets of Manila have erupted with massive demonstrations as thousands of Filipinos protest against what they call one of the country’s most explosive corruption scandals in recent years. The anger stems from allegations of widespread mismanagement and kickbacks involving multi-billion-dollar government flood-control infrastructure projects, which critics claim were riddled with fraud and political favoritism.

Crowds have gathered in key parts of the city, including Luneta Park, the EDSA Shrine, the People Power Monument, and near Malacañang Palace, demanding accountability and sweeping reforms. While most of the demonstrations have remained peaceful, tensions flared when a group of masked individuals dressed in black began throwing rocks, burning tires, and provoking police near bridges leading to the presidential palace. Authorities responded quickly, arresting 17 people for acts of vandalism and violence.

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. acknowledged the public outrage, expressing support for peaceful protests while calling for calm amid rising tensions. His administration has announced the formation of an independent commission to investigate the flood-control project scandal, a move aimed at restoring public trust.

The protests highlight a growing frustration among Filipinos who feel that corruption has long undermined public services and infrastructure development. As investigations unfold and demonstrations continue, the country faces a pivotal moment that could reshape public faith in its government and institutions.
